On June 7th and 8th at Thetford Forest the trees will resound with the noise of singlespeeders trying to be competitive in how much fun they can have on a bike.
First off will be the Spot/Sideways Cycles Team Relay Race. Teams of two (far too keen) and four (that's more like it) will take it in turns to race around a shortened version of the XC course on Saturday evening, around 7pm. Truly competitive singlespeeders might just be seen downing a beer between each handover, though that's not for us to condone, obviously... :-) The race will be less than two hours in length and finish in twilight. You can enter this event on the day and thanks to the generous sponsors, the entry has been kept to just a fiver a racer (still needed to cover the full first aid, insurance and marshalling). It's certainly a reason for turning up early on the Saturday. And racers from last year can attest to the 'mellow' campsite atmosphere on the Saturday night too.
On race day, Sunday 8th June, the European and UK Singlespeed Championships will commence at 11am (early enough for the mandatory hangovers to still be in force) and will consist of two laps of a fantastically fun 10 mile loop on some of Thetford's famous wiggly, tree-lined singletrack.
Now this is where it might get complicated There is also a Thetford Bicycle Enduro race on at the same time, open to geared riders, which will be four laps of the course (40 miles). Singlespeeders are welcome to race on for four laps and take on the geared Enduro riders. Your entry fee (and entry form) covers you for either distance, but the Singlespeed Champions will be the first over the line after two laps. Does that make sense? All one speed bikes are welcome
As usual, there will be a heap of great prizes, with the best ones going to riders who've had the most fun (so, rarely any of the winners then...) There is no gear limit, though if you turn up with a 48T big ring (and that's not what you normally ride) then expect people to point and laugh at your 'big ring'. (Jon Webb and Sara Randle both won last year on 32x16, actually Sarah had 32:17!)
And here's the entry form - it's a small, rough and ready pdf. If you want the full colour version, email Chipps and he'll send you one to stick on your wall.
